Cleethorpes – changes are on the way!

General

The latest round of engagement for the Pier Gardens and Market Place projects has now closed with hundreds of you having your say.

The final designs for the two major projects are being completed by the consultants who have been talking with local people to get their input over the last few weeks. The designs will be going to the Council’s Cabinet in the coming weeks for sign off so that procurement of contractors can begin, and work can be scheduled in.

In the background, work is underway to start getting areas of Cleethorpes ready for the developments.

In the next few weeks, some early work will be done to clear parts of the Pier Gardens site and prepare areas for the next stage of the construction works.

Pier Gardens vegetation removal

For Pier Gardens, people wanted to support the introduction of play equipment for children of all ages, alongside a contemplative and peaceful area at one end of the gardens, through to an area that could be used for events and activities at the other.

As part of the early “enabling” works, the privet maze, currently at the southern end of Pier Gardens is due to be removed in the coming weeks. Although a well-used attraction, particularly for younger children, the maze has unfortunately also attracted some anti-social behaviour over the years, and it doesn’t form part of the new plans which have been seen by hundreds of people. The maze area will be used by the Armed Forces team to enhance the event this year.

Another tree, the spiral shaped conifer near Strikewing memorial will also be removed at the same time. As part of the same works, a tree that has died along the Alexandra Road section near the bowling green will also be taken down.

Later in the month, Buddleia will be removed from within the Sea Road site compound and vegetation will also be removed from behind the Resort office so that work can be carried out to repair the retaining wall.

To comply with wildlife regulations, a full check of the bushes and trees will be done, overseen by ecologists, before they are removed to make sure that there are no nesting birds.

Sea Road toilets

The Sea Road building site, in the heart of Cleethorpes, is due to be remodelled with the main construction works starting in the coming months.

In order to make way for the new building construction, the toilets at Sea Road are planned to be closed in early June to fit in with utility contractor timescales so that they can be stripped of asbestos, decommissioned and demolished in the summer.

Additional temporary toilet provision is being brought in for the summer, sited near the existing toilet block on Sea Road, and the toilets at Grant Street have been reopened, and will remain open, while the works at the Sea Road site are on the ground.

Once the main building is complete and opened, it will contain new public facilities, which will include a Changing Places facility.

New flagpoles

The existing flagpoles at the Memorial Gate are in need of replacement. Work to do this will also be done in early June, ahead of the Armed Forces Day celebrations at the end of the month. Follow Armed Forces Cleethorpes on Facebook to keep up to date with announcements.

Pedestrian access

While works are being done, there may be localised restrictions to pathways for safety. Please make sure to follow any diversion routes put in place.
