About the project

The DUNE project is a new initiative in North East Lincolnshire, focused on protecting and understanding the natural coastline around Cleethorpes, especially the salt marshes and sand dunes along the Humber Estuary. This area is really important for wildlife and is officially recognised for its special habitats.

Our goals:

  • Preserve the coastline
  • Increase access and participation
  • Investing in skills and research
  • Protect our natural heritage

Meet the Coastal Ranger

Josh helps people connect with Cleethorpes’ unique coastline, raising awareness of its environmental importance and encouraging respectful enjoyment. He supports the DUNE Project alongside a dedicated Research and Engagement Officer, monitors protected species, and promotes conservation through guided walks, school visits, and community outreach – all to protect this rare and vital habitat for future generations.

From September to March, Josh will be hosting seven events starting from the Leisure Centre, Boating Lake and Country Park.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. The DUNE project is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks for National Lottery players, we have been able to appoint a Coastal Ranger as well as a Research and Engagement Officer. Both roles are designed to raise awareness of the natural heritage of our coastline and build relationships with businesses, local residents, visitors and schools by offering educational activities, creating surveys and ecological monitoring.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the largest funder for the UK’s heritage. Using money raised by National Lottery players we support projects that connect people and communities to heritage. Our vision is for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future. From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more.

Heritage can be anything from the past that people value and want to pass on to future generations. We believe in the power of heritage to ignite the imagination, offer joy and inspiration, and to build pride in place and connection to the past. heritagefund.org.uk
