THE final stages of work to reshape the highways and pathways along Cleethorpes’ Alexandra Road takes place later this month with an overnight road closure for complete resurfacing.
With just some re-paving left to do under the balconies on the retail side of the road, left until the future of the Victorian structures is decided, this final stage marks the end of 18-months of improvement works along High Street, Alexandra Road and Sea View Street.
Over the last year and a half, grant funding won, and investment made by North East Lincolnshire Council and delivered by its regeneration partner ENGIE has seen the major programme of re-paving, landscaping, seating and highway remodelling.
This is now reaching its final stage with the five-night closure of Alexandra Road for the resurfacing. It will be closed to all traffic each night from the Sea Road/Market Street roundabout to Knoll Street between the hours of 7pm and 5am from the evening of Monday, 20 July until the morning of Saturday 25 July.
A marked diversion route will direct traffic along Queen’s Parade, Trinity Road, Beacon Avenue, Clee Road, Issacs Hill and back up to the High Street. There will be no access for any traffic during these hours, nor will there be any on-street parking.
With just a small number of contractors left on site to deal with minor remedial works the improvements in this area of the resort are now finished, in time for the main summer season and as businesses open-up again post-lockdown.
Welcoming the end of the works, North East Lincolnshire Council’s Regeneration lead, Cllr John Fenty said: “I would like to take this opportunity, once again, to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
“We do appreciate that it has not been easy at times, as it never is when such works are taking place over a lengthy period. Recently too, we know how many businesses have been significantly affected by the COVID-19 restrictions. We hope that their lifting and the completion of these works, allow Cleethorpes to have a good summer season. I think we would all agree that this work has made a significant difference to the look and feel of the resort.
“As a council we are committed to looking at ways in which we can help Cleethorpes in the long-term. It is a fantastic seaside resort and one that has an equally fantastic heritage.”
The public realm works along Alexandra Road, High Street and Sea View Street have been made possible due to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Coastal Communities Fund.
Elsewhere in the resort, support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Coastal Communities Fund, the Local Transport Plan, (LTP), and the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership has, and continues to help, fund the extensive improvement works. These include the North Prom arts project, the Sea Road redevelopment project, public realm work on High Street and Sea Road, and the new Sea Road roundabout and crossing.
