Yarbrough Ward Councillor, John Mills, has been appointed as North East Lincolnshire Council’s Armed Forces Champion, becoming an advocate for the Armed Forces community in the borough.

Councillor Mills served in the British Army for 15-years, joining the Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Artillery, before being posted to Germany, Northern Ireland and the First Gulf War. Cllr Mills later served as a Physical Training Instructor at the Military Corrective Training Centre. He left the Army in 2000 due to injury.

Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Oliver Freeston, made the announcement earlier this week.

The Armed Forces Champion is the Council’s nominated member advocate for the Armed Forces community and for the Armed Forces Covenant – national scheme to encourage organisations and businesses to support armed forces veterans and serving personnel.

Speaking about the role, Councillor Oliver Freeston said:

“The role of Armed Forces Champion provides visible political leadership, advocacy and support for the Council’s Armed Forces Covenant commitments and promotes awareness of the needs and contributions of serving personnel, reservists, veterans, cadet force adult volunteers (CFAV’s), cadets and military families.

“I’m really pleased that Councillor Mills has accepted this appointment, and I know that he will be a fantastic advocate for our Armed Forces community.”

Councillor John Mills, Armed Forces Champion for North East Lincolnshire, said:

“I’m thrilled to have been asked to step into this role. I really am passionate about supporting our armed forces, and I know first hand how important that support can be.

“Because of the geography of our area, we have a sizeable Armed Forces community here in North East Lincolnshire.

“Looking ahead, I’ll be working to ensure that the Council continues to meet its commitments under the Armed Forces Covenant, and really seeking to strengthen those relationships between the local authority and our Armed Forces community.”
