The Council are helping to get the borough up and about with recent funding.

£1.1 million from Sport England will pave the way for partnership working to get people moving and reduce physical inactivity across the borough.

Headed up by Move Together North East Lincolnshire (NEL), the work will focus on residents and communities who find it difficult to be active in their day-to-day life.

Over the next 18 months, supported by Sport England, they will lead a programme to provide delivery of key activities focusing on:

  • Supporting local programmes and activities to improve physical activity levels in North East Lincolnshire.
  • Improving access to local parks, green spaces and supporting you on ways to travel locally through movement.
  • Reducing barriers to help you move in a way that you enjoy whilst providing access to opportunities that help you be more active.
  • Improve experiences for children by ensuring young people have access to movement across the school day, giving them the best start in life.
  • Creating an approach with healthcare, education and charitable professionals making it easier to access referral routes to help those with long term health conditions being active.

To make this a reality, the Move Together NEL group will be helping one another throughout the next year and a half

The group consists of representatives from the local authority, health and voluntary sectors and community groups who are all passionate about making a difference.

If you are a local individual, club or organisation who delivers activities that supports movement related to health and wellbeing and are interested in getting involved. Councillor Nige Oliver, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care, said: “We fully welcome this funding as a Council and will be using it to make the largest positive impact we can on the lives of our residents.

“I look forward to seeing what the Move Together group come up with in the following weeks and months – this is just the beginning of something amazing for North East Lincolnshire.”

Councillor Bob Callison, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Tourism and Culture, was equally thrilled to welcome the investment. “Sport isn’t just about health, it’s about much more.

“This borough wouldn’t be what it is without the likes of Cleethorpes Town or Grimsby Town Football Club and these things don’t flourish without funding like this.

“I’m excited to see what we can achieve as a Council with this and I’m sure it’s the start of something brilliant.”

Lindsay Hudson, Assistant Director for Public Health at the Council, added: “Everyone should have the opportunity to be active in a way that works for them. This funding will help us work with communities to remove barriers and create enjoyable, accessible ways for people to move more.

“As a Marmot Place, this is an important part of giving everyone in North East Lincolnshire a fair opportunity to live a healthier life.”

Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Sport England’s Executive Director for Partnerships and Place, said: “We want everyone, no matter where they live or who they are, to have the chance to be active and healthy. To do this, we’re focusing on places, towns, cities, and communities, where people face the biggest challenges.

“We are committed to working with local partners and communities to break down the barriers to physical activity so that everyone has equal access to a more active life. We are excited to see what we can achieve together in North East Lincolnshire.”
