Jobs, training and volunteering

From helping someone achieve their dream job to helping another apply for college – a Council led service is helping change lives in more ways than one.

The Young People’s Support Service (YPSS) helps those aged 16-25 get in to the career that’s right for them. Open to everyone, it’s an invaluable tool for making sure you take the right step forward for your next stage in life.

Through one‑to‑one support, help with post‑16 applications, and personalised planning, the team works to ensure young people make informed choices about education, training and employment.

For Careers Advisor Amy Bunce, making a difference is the reason she started the job in the first place. She said: “When I was younger, I dreamt of working in the media as a Press Officer, but when I finished university, I realised what I really wanted to do was help people in some way. I started as an Information Assistant at the local careers service and progressed from there.

She added: “I think all young people can ‘own their future’. Sometimes it takes small steps to get to where we want to be but with a bit of support and self-belief, anything is possible.”

Recently, Amy helped local young person Lacey get closer to achieving her goal of working in a care home. Lacey was a home‑educated student who first met with Amy to explore her post‑16 options. Initially, she was keen to go to college; however, after researching her choices further, she realised that a more work‑based pathway would suit her better.

To support her next steps, Amy visited Avant with Lacey. Lacey remained engaged throughout the process, keeping in regular contact and attending all scheduled appointments.

Lacey then completed a seven‑week Skills Experience course at Avant training and a twelve‑week placement at Bradley House Care Home, where she embraced every opportunity – from playing bingo with residents to supporting a pen‑pal initiative for young people. She continued studying Maths and English at Avant and has now successfully taken the next step: she has secured a job in a care home, building on the confidence, experience and qualifications gained through YPSS and Avant.

Grateful for the help the YPSS gave her, Lacey said: “I’ve completed my 7‑week Skills Experience course at Avant and am going to do work experience in a care home. I really couldn’t have gotten here without your help, so thank you.”

Speaking about the success, Amy added: “I am incredibly proud of Lacey. She has overcome significant personal and educational challenges, yet her resilience, positivity and determination shine through.

“I wish her every success in the opportunities that come her way—she has the right attitude to go far.”

Councillor Margaret Cracknell, Portfolio Holder for Children, Education and Families, added: “It’s incredibly encouraging to hear how the dedication and compassion of the Young People’s Support Service team are making a real difference in the lives of young people and their families across North East Lincolnshire. Our young people are the future of our borough, and it’s vital that we empower them with the confidence and skills they need to thrive in education, employment, and beyond.

“I strongly encourage anyone who feels unsure about their next steps in careers, education or training to reach out to YPSS.”
