The Credit Union is now open for walk-in clients at a new base at Grimsby’s Doughty Learning Centre.

‘Helping people in North East Lincolnshire be better off’ is the mantra of the organisation, which offers a variety of affordable loans and safe savings accounts for all ages. These include school uniform loans, family benefit plans, first saver accounts, and general loans of up to £20,000.

Since it opened in Grimsby in 2022, 960 local members have joined the not-for-profit Credit Union, with 782 members taking out loans totalling £1,283,574. This, says the CU, has saved these people more than £962,680 in interest charges by using this service instead of doorstep lenders.

Until recently the CU had its Grimsby base at the Central Library building in the town centre. Following its temporary closure, it has now moved to the Learning Centre – directly opposite North East Lincolnshire Council’s Municipal Offices in Town Hall Square. (the entrance is through the side door of the Doughty Learning Centre main building – next to the car park on the left hand side of the Town Hall as you look from the front. It is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from10am until 2pm when colleagues Sally Johnston and Quinn Needham are there to help and advise.

There’s also pop-ins on the following days:

  • Tuesdays, 10am until 12.30pm at the Centre4 Community Shop;
  • Wednesdays 11am until 2pm at West Marsh Community Centre;
  • Second Thursday each month 9am until 1pm at Immingham Family Hub;
  • Fridays 10am until 2pm at The Courtyard, Freeman Street Market.

Pleased to be able to offer a temporary home for the Credit Union, North East Lincolnshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Finance, Resources and Assets, Cllr Steve Harness, said: “The Credit Union undoubtedly offers an extremely good service for our residents in North East Lincolnshire, both saving them money whilst offering them affordable ways to improve their lives and those of their children and relatives.

“We know there are unscrupulous people out there who will exploit those who need financial help and it is services like the Credit Union that offer a reliable and trustworthy alternative,” he added.
