The council’s grounds and bereavement services teams have been working with the Pier Gardens regeneration team on a piece of work to relocate memorial plaques that are on benches in the gardens, ahead of the start of the development.
Memorial plaques are often attached to benches in our parks, open spaces or on the sea front, so that people can remember their loved ones in a special place.
Over the summer, where we have records, owners of plaques within Pier Gardens have been contacted, and we have been working with them to agree alternative locations to site their plaques, with many of these being on benches along the sea front.
However, there are some plaques in the Gardens that we don’t have owner records for, so the council is putting out a call for people to come forward and claim them.
Cllr Henry Hudson, Cabinet member for the environment, said: “We know memorial plaques mean a lot to people, and we’d like to see owners come forward and have a chat about the next steps. We have various different options that people can choose from, but at this stage, we just need to identify who owns what.”
The plaques will be removed from Pier Gardens in early November (week beginning 3 November) and where a new location has been agreed, will be installed in the same week ahead of Remembrance weekend.
The plaques will be held in our Bereavement Services offices for a year to give people the chance to contact us and discuss what they want to do with them.
