In a 3.30am operation at low tide today, North East Lincolnshire Council organised a salvage operation to safely remove the vehicle stuck on Cleethorpes Beach.

Colleagues from the Environmental Services Team planned the removal – bringing in specialists contractors to carry out recovery of the vehicle, which was then taken away by a salvage company. The team also ensured they had equipment at hand to deal with any spills, but that was not needed.

The council’s Head of Street Scene and Environment, Chris Dunn explained why the recovery took place in the early hours of today.

Crews removed the vehicle in the early hours of this morning

“We planned the operation to ensure there was a low tide at a time of the day when there were no visitors on the beach or in the resort, which was vital for safety reasons.

“All the necessary health and safety measures were followed, and we are pleased to have ensured the vehicle is now gone ahead of the weekend.”

North East Lincolnshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and the Visitor Economy Cllr Hayden Dawkins praised all those involved: “Our hope earlier this week was that the vehicle owner would take responsibility for this and arrange for their vehicle to be removed, that is what we all wanted.

“However this weekend, with good weather forecast, will be one of the busiest in Cleethorpes and the last thing any of us wanted was for visitors, many of them families, to come to the beach and look out to see an abandoned vehicle stuck on the shore. Therefore, the decision was taken to get it removed safely and I thank Chris and his team for arranging this.”

The authority confirmed it would be intending to recuperate costs from the vehicle owner.
