SUNDAY night motorists are reminded that Grimsby’s A180, between the current roadworks from Lockhill Roundabout to Westgate Roundabout, will be fully closed at 8pm.
Both carriageways will shut on the night of 20 September to enable traffic management to be changed around – it will re-open as soon as that is done. This will allow for an extended contraflow to be put into place so that the east side of the road (heading towards Cleethorpes) can be fully resurfaced. That will finish on Thursday 8 October.
After that, the end is near for the major roadworks on the three A180 bridges with the following left:
- The works on site this week have seen repairs to the footway – construction of kerbs and then pouring concrete to create the base of the footway, which has required fewer workers on site. The concrete will then be left to cure over this weekend.
- The longer contraflow will then be put in place on Sunday night, as outlined above.
- That will be replaced by a short contraflow westbound between Thursday 8 October, and Friday 16 October for replacement joints.
- Monday 19 October. One lane closed on each side (so traffic flow is maintained) until Wednesday 11 November to replace central reservation barriers.
- Wednesday 11 November – works finished with all restrictions removed.
The scheme, which was supported by a significant Department for Transport grant, was vital to prevent the ultimate failure of the three main bridges/flyovers on the A180. This was a danger if the decades-old structures were left without repair.
This latest programme of work comes as North East Lincolnshire Council Leader, Cllr Oliver Freeston says that, in his view, the delays to this whole project – the original finish date was September – are unacceptable and have caused disruption to too many motorists for too long.
He added how he had sought answers on completion, work taking place on site and assurances that appropriate measures would be taken following completion to ensure the delays from September to November were addressed.
“Of course, we need to ensure this major road into Grimsby and Cleethorpes is fit for purpose and structurally fit and this scheme will make sure that is the case. However, as with any such works, we must not just accept delays without question, especially on such important routes. This scheme has caused significant disruption to many thousands of motorists,” said Cllr Freeston.
