Saturday 19 September: drop in and see some of the finds at Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre
In addition to the wonderful things going on over Heritage Open Days weekends in North East Lincolnshire over the next few weeks, there’s a new event, unique to the town!
Archaeologists were brought in to do an excavation at the Freshney Place extension in late 2025 and early 2026.
The site was where an “attenuation” tank has now been sited. This tank essentially holds run off rain water and releases it slowly into the water system so that drains don’t get overloaded.
The tank is approximately a big cube, so the local heritage officer requested a dig to see if there were any remains of early Grimsby history in the space.
York Archaeology were contracted through the development to excavate the area, and as has been previously reported, have found lots of evidence of medieval Grimsby, in particular, evidence of leather working along with other bits of daily life and commercial activity.
Some of these finds are being brought back to Grimsby for a special Heritage Open Day event at Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre on Saturday 19 September. You can drop in and see them on display and talk with the archaeologists any time from 1030am to 3pm on the day.
York Archaeology and BWB Consulting are in the middle of producing the report about the site, and also stabilising some of the organic finds, like wooden stakes and leather shoe offcuts, so they can be brought back in future.
Cabinet member for environment, tourism and culture, Cllr Bob Callison, said: “This is absolutely brilliant news, and I’m sure lots of people will be interested in the findings so far. I’m really looking forward to chatting with the archaeologists and finding out more about our history and our town.”
