ENTRY TICKETS GOING FAST TO INAUGURAL FESTIVAL OF THE SEA WHILE THE DIGITAL EVENT IS ALREADY IN FULL FLOW!
IF YOU are looking to join in with Grimsby’s latest family event, timed tickets for this weekend’s Festival of the Sea are going fast!
While tickets are free, visitors must pre-book their slots as Covid restrictions remain in place and social distancing will still be required when in St James’ Square, where the festival is being held. The area will be named ‘Festival Square’ for the day.
Festival of the Sea will be a vibrant day of free street theatre, music and dance, taking place on Saturday, July 17, in the newly landscaped square. Audiences are invited to experience the talents of local, regional and national artists bringing giant puppets, mechanical sculpture, acrobatics, and plenty of fish! Enjoy food stalls, entertainment and the Minster will also be open for coffee and tea.
The live programme includes Out of the Deep Blue by Autin Dance, featuring a sea giant ‘washed up on the shore’, and there’ll be music from Manchester’s International Roots Orchestra and comical street theatre acts, including Val and Halla – two Abba-obsessed Vikings.
An off-site programme of events includes ‘Congregation’, a magical sonic sphere which will take you on a journey to a secret location. Guided by sound alone, you will have to keep your sphere happy by going in the right direction! Take a journey with the spheres on Saturday, July 17, at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Festival of the Sea also includes a digital element, which has been taking place since Monday, July 12. Part of the week’s online events include two short plays, written by local group Breakwater Theatre. Commissioned by festival organisers, each nostalgic piece has strong links to the sea and the local area.
“There are two films, each five minutes in length with one called ‘Tea Break’ and the other called ‘Sea Fever’,” said Breakwater’s Sara Beasley, who is working alongside Breakwater co-founder Andy Evans. “We are very honoured to have been asked to be a part of this festival and to have our work on record. It is great to have the opportunity to showcase local talent and we’re happy that we have been included in the programme.”

Festival of the Sea will dive into Grimsby’s future, present and past relationship with the sea, and is being produced by Grimsby-based events organisation The Culture House, in partnership with one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts organisations, Walk the Plank.
