A celebration of social work took place earlier this week at the University Centre Grimsby, shining a spotlight on the social work profession in the region.

People who work with children, families and vulnerable adults came together to celebrate their work and to mark the launch of a new social work degree course being offered by University Centre Grimsby, part of the TEC Partnership.

The session, which took place on Tuesday 5th May, was opened by keynote speaker, author and champion for children in care, Steven Russell.

The day included a number of seminars, panel discussions from key figures in social work, and networking opportunities.

Speaking at the event, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, Ann-Marie Matson, said:

“We are here to demonstrate our shared commitment for social work and the remarkable progress that we can make together – that collective ambition.

“At the heart of social work and indeed at the heart of everything we do are the relationships we build with people, with families, with each other.

“They enable us to unlock the change and make support human.

“Today is the culmination of determination, relentless ambition, collaboration and the strength of relationships.”

Director of Adult Social Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, Katie Brown, added:

“I want to reiterate my thanks to everyone who attended the festival – it’s so great to see social workers from across our entire partnership in one room for one day together.

“Everyday across this community, social workers are quietly changing the course of people’s lives.

“Whether it’s a child who finally feels safe, an older person who is no longer lonely, or a family who is supporting one of our most vulnerable residents, behind each of these people and their families stands our social workers and support staff.

“This is a fantastic profession and one that we’re keen to support more people into in our area.”

Andy Cowdroy, Professional Lead in Social Work for University Grimsby, shared:

“We’re incredibly proud to have hosted such an inspiring celebration of social work here at University Centre Grimsby. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who joined us – practitioners, partners, and speakers – for their passion, insight and continued commitment to supporting children, families and vulnerable adults across our region.

“The launch of our new social work degree marks a significant step forward, not only for our institution but for the profession locally. It represents our commitment to developing the next generation of skilled, compassionate social workers who understand the unique needs of our communities.

“By investing in education and training here in North East Lincolnshire, we are strengthening the future of social work and helping to ensure that high-quality support remains available where it is needed most.”
