North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, have teamed up with Cycle Hub Lincs to offer free secure indoor cycle parking at Grimsby and Cleethorpes Cycle Hubs to mark Cycle to Work Day next month.

On Thursday 5 August, those cycling to work will be able to park freely and securely for the day in either Grimsby Cycle Hub, located at Grimsby Train Station, or Cleethorpes Cycle Hub, located at Cleethorpes Train Station, from 7:45am until 5:45pm.

The free parking incentive aims to provide cyclists with an opportunity to trial the facilities and consider if cycling to work could become their main method of travelling to and from work each day.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “As a local authority, working with our partner, ENGIE, we continue to push forward with our commitment to improving sustainable travel infrastructure, most recently this can be demonstrated with our Cycle Superhighway works – a new 3.8km off-road cycleway constructed to give cyclists a safe and sustainable route.

“But it is also vital we continue to work with our partners, ensuring that while we develop the infrastructure, we also have in place the right opportunities and projects to support the behavioural shift and people’s transition to cleaner and greener methods of transport.

“Working with Cycle Hub Lincs, this is a great opportunity for local residents to trial cycling to work, discover some of the infrastructure improvements we are making and join other cyclists to mark Cycle to Work Day. Cycling has many physical and mental health benefits, and if you can, I would urge you to get involved.”

Janine Walker, managing director of Cycle Hub Lincs CIC, added: “Our ethos, as a Community Interest Company, is ‘Keeping the Community Cycling’. The more people we can encourage to ride a bike, the healthier and fitter the individual and the fewer motor vehicles on the road. Healthier community, less traffic and less pollution means a better environment for everyone.

“To give people the confidence to ride into town without fear of their bicycles being stolen, we offer low-cost secure indoor parking for no more than £1.50 a day with heavily discounted monthly and annual options available. Anyone is welcome to just walk in and park their bike with us, no paperwork to fill in and you don’t even need your own lock.

“We also have a great team of professional qualified mechanics on hand to fix anything from punctures to brake bleeds, to custom wheel builds with all levels of servicing and maintenance in between. As a not-for-profit company, we keep our costs as low as possible so that everyone can afford to keep their bike safely maintained and on the road.”
