Young women from schools across Lincolnshire tried their hand at welding at an initiative designed to break down barriers and open doors to careers in traditionally male-dominated industries.

25 students from Years 10 and 12 spent the day immersed in hands-on activities at CATCH’s Welding and Pipefitting Hub in Stallingborough. From practical sessions to a chocolate welding challenge, the day offered a unique introduction to the skills and opportunities available in the sector.

During the day, students had the opportunity to hear from female professionals working in the industry who shared their personal journeys. Local employers and apprenticeship providers also attended, offering advice and explaining different career pathways.

Organised by CATCH’s Outreach and Engagement team and supported by expert welding tutors, the event was made possible due to sponsorship from Air Products.

Caitlin Brewitt, Outreach and Engagement Lead at CATCH, said: “We’re passionate about making careers in welding and engineering both visible and accessible to young women, not only here at CATCH but across the entire sector. These industries are still male-dominated, and we want to change that by giving girls the chance to explore these roles in a supportive, hands-on environment.

“You can’t be what you can’t see. That’s why it’s so powerful for these students to connect with women who are thriving in these careers – it makes the future feel achievable.”

Building on the success of last year’s event, sponsored by Lincoln Electric UK, this year’s taster day continues to gain momentum. One student from the previous event is now preparing to begin her welding career at CATCH, crediting the experience with inspiring her next steps.

In the Humber region, manufacturing accounts for 17% of employment, nearly double the national average of 8.7%. With investment in renewable energy and a rising demand for STEM-qualified professionals in North East Lincolnshire, initiatives like Women into Welding are vital to building a more diverse and skilled workforce.

Councillor Philip Jackson, Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Economy, Regeneration, Devolution and Skills, praised the initiative: “It’s great to see companies in our borough supporting the growing workforce and empowering young people to explore careers in our region’s thriving industries. This taster day not only connects students with employers but also highlights the incredible opportunities available here in North East Lincolnshire.

“Every job created, every skill developed, contributes to the wider transformation of our borough that we want for our future. A skilled workforce drives innovation and supports the delivery of key regeneration projects. By nurturing local talent and linking with local opportunity, we’re not just supporting people, we’re shaping a place that’s ambitious and full of potential.”
