Grimsby Interns feature in video about successful programme at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital

A new video has been launched to showcase the successful supported internship offer at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.

Watch as two current interns share their journey from education to gaining valuable work experience, their aspirations for the future, and how their roles today are paving the way toward achieving paid employment.

The Supported Internship Programme is dedicated to empowering individuals with learning difficulties and autism, providing them with the support and tools they need to thrive in the workplace and unlock brighter futures.

In North East Lincolnshire this programme is designed for young adults aged 18-24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Over the course of a year, participants explore diverse roles in areas such as catering, hospitality, engineering and maintenance, computers and administration, retail, and portering services. With the guidance of a job coach, they gain invaluable experience, develop skills, and build confidence—all laying a solid foundation for their transition into paid employment.

Supported Internships are unique as they also give young people access to a wider network of individuals who work with them in a structured way on the wider skills needed to make working life and living independently as a young adult a positive and successful experience.

Councillor Margaret Cracknell Portfolio Holder said: “The impact of this initiative is already evident.

“Last year, three of the six interns went onto paid employment—a testament to the programme’s success and the potential of its participants.

“Their experiences highlight how supported internships offer young people not just opportunities to work but to grow, achieve independence, and contribute meaningfully to their community.”

Annie Cook, Lead EHCP Coordinator for post-16 said: “The Local Authority works together with educational settings and host organisations to make this opportunity a reality.

“We’re eager to see the growth and accomplishments of our new interns as they progress through their journey.

“Young people who are coming up to this stage in their preparation for adulthood journey should start to consider this opportunity.”
