A local student is celebrating after succeeding in his GCSES despite facing personal challenges as a care-experienced young person.

16-year-old James* collected his results last week alongside thousands of students across England, receiving a Grade 4 pass in five subjects as well as qualifications in Sports Science and Design Technology.

Exam results day is a huge moment for every young person, but for those who have been in care, it can come with additional challenges. Children in care and care leavers often face barriers including lower educational attainment, limited work experience and professional networks, reduced confidence and self-esteem, housing instability, financial insecurity, and restricted access to career guidance and mentorship.

Despite these challenges, care-experienced young people have aspirations that can be nurtured and developed like any other child. As Corporate and Community parents, the Council is committed to ensuring that children in care and care leavers receive support they need to flourish.

James’* accomplishment is a testament to his hard work and determination, even doing extra tuition in Maths and English arranged through North East Lincolnshire Council’s Virtual School. Now, he is preparing to begin a plastering apprenticeship and attend trade college, hoping to begin a career in the construction industry.

In the words of James* himself: “I’m buzzing. I can’t believe it.”

Claire Quickfall, James’* Social Worker, spoke about her pride for his achievements: “James* has faced numerous barriers throughout his secondary education, and achieving the results he did last week is a testament to his incredible strength and determination to succeed.

“Alongside James’* unwavering effort, he was supported by loving and dedicated carers who were his biggest cheerleaders every step of the way. Watching James* overcome moments of doubt and grow in confidence has been inspiring. I am so proud of him – this young man can achieve absolutely anything he sets his mind to.”

Councillor Margaret Cracknell, Portfolio Holder for Children and Education, said: “I want to say a huge congratulations to James* on the success of his GCSE results. We want the children in our care and care leavers to achieve the best educational, training, and economic outcomes possible – just like any parent would wish for their child. That means helping them access higher education, employment, or training if that’s what they choose, and ensuring they receive the right information, support, and opportunities to prepare them for adulthood.

“We are incredibly proud of James* and all the young people across North East Lincolnshire who have received their results this year and wish them every success as they build a bright future.”
