“It’s given me a lifeline – I feel worthy again.”: Mum of four praises Careers Café for life-changing impact

A local woman has shared her inspiring journey back into work after nearly two decades away from employment, crediting the Adult Careers Team and TARGET NEL CIC for helping her rediscover her confidence, purpose, and sense of self-worth.

Mum of four and nana, Krista Theaker-Gregersen, has spent many years juggling roles from a carer, cleaner, dance coach – and even a clown!

When her daughter became unwell, Krista became her full-time carer and homemaker, stepping back from work to focus on her family. But as her daughter grew older, Krista felt a desire to return to employment. Despite worries of where to start, the first step came when she visited the Careers Café in Freshney Place.

“I walked in out of curiosity,” said Krista. “Straight away I was met with warmth. We sat down with a cup of coffee and after I asked about getting back into work, they told me about careerShift.

Run by the Council’s Adult Careers Team, careerShift connects participants with local employers and provides holistic support including self‑evaluation, wellbeing guidance, financial advice, and access to counselling or physical training where needed.

“It became the highlight of my week. I honestly feared I’d struggle to find my footing in the world of work again, but they never let me undersell myself,” added Krista.

After completing the programme, Krista was offered the chance to work with Taking Action Raising Grimsby’s Emerging Talents (TARGET NEL CIC) – an organisation delivering training schemes, employment support and community‑focused initiatives for both young people and adults.

TARGET works closely with the Adult Careers Team to deliver careerShift and is also commissioned to run the Education Other Than at School (EOTAS) model. Their Train 2 Employ programme offers 12 weeks of CPD‑certified training, hands‑on experience and holistic support for adults who want to make a positive difference in the lives of young people.

Krista spoke of the transformative impact TARGET has had on her life already, saying: “Everyone is so welcoming. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and you can be yourself with no judgement. With the support I’ve had, and still have, I truly feel confident and worthy of doing work that suits me.

“If you feel stuck in your job or have been out of work for years like I was, don’t think you can’t find your way back. careerShift and TARGET have given me a lifeline. I finally feel worthy – and you’re worthy too. As an old clown would say: pick yourself up, dust off the sawdust, and start all over again.”

Located in Freshney Place (next to Trespass and opposite Next), the Careers Café offers a warm, accessible environment where people can explore training, skills and employment support.

It’s open:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9am – 4pm
  • Friday: 9am – 2pm
  • Saturday: 10am – 4pm (Wrap around Family Support)

Wendy Trask, Operations Manager for Employability at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “It’s a privilege to lead a team so committed to helping people like Krista take their next steps. Both the Careers Café and careerShift are designed to meet people where they are – whether they need a quick chat or more specialised support. Seeing Krista grow in confidence, rediscover her strengths and embrace new opportunities is exactly why these services exist. Her journey is inspiring, and we’re incredibly proud of her progress.”

Councillor Philip Jackson, Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Economy, Devolution and Skills, added: “Krista’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference our local training and support services can make. TARGET NEL and the Adult Careers Team give people the tools, confidence and encouragement to rebuild their lives and contribute their skills to our community. I would urge anyone considering taking that first step to reach out – these programmes are changing lives, and they could change yours too.”
