Ice creams, fish and chips and getting thrown on to sand – sound like a good day out?
If that’s your idea of heaven or you fancy something new, make sure you don’t miss out on the UK’s first ever beach wrestling event in Cleethorpes this Summer!
Organised by British Wrestling, the event will see a host of members battling out in the ring to be crowned champion on Saturday, 25 July, just next to Cleethorpes leisure centre.
However, this event isn’t just for the spectacle – the British Wrestling Beach Wrestling Championships will contribute toward selection for future Great Britain (GBR) Beach Wrestling teams.
Athletes competing in Cleethorpes will be assessed as part of British Wrestling’s longer-term pathway for international representation at major United World Wrestling events.
Throughout the morning, weigh ins will be carried out in the leisure centre before the first round of bouts get underway on the sand from 11am – 1.30pm. The best bit is it’s completely free to attend so make sure to come down and see how it all works!
However, be prepared to witness something different to your average wrestling match. Beach Wrestling is a standing-only style, contested in a seven‑metre sand circle, with fast-paced bouts decided by throws, takedowns, and boundary control.
The match ends when one of the competitors gets three points, typically by throwing their opponent on to their back.
A spokesperson for British Wrestling, said: “We’re delighted that Cleethorpes will host the first ever officially sanctioned beach wrestling competition in the UK.
“This is a landmark moment for the sport, bringing an exciting and fast‑growing international discipline to a vibrant coastal setting. We’re proud to be working in partnership with North East Lincolnshire Council to deliver an event that will showcase our sport to new audiences and inspire the next generation of wrestlers.”
Councillor Tanya Brasted, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and the Visitor Economy, said: “This shows exactly why Cleethorpes is amazing. Hosting the UK’s first event of this type is a prestigious moment and nothing more than the resort deserves.
“If you can, come down and see what it’s all about – and don’t forget, Great Grub Fest will be on at the same time so why not grab a bite to eat whilst you’re there!”
