FOR one North East Lincolnshire man, adult learning has given him a new lease of life.

Encouraging people to go along to an adult learning and skills roadshow, being staged in Grimsby and Cleethorpes from tomorrow, (Monday January 9), the 51-year-old has talked of his experiences. The words of ‘LJ’ speak for themselves…

“I worked for 34 years, up until three years ago when I had to give up due to ill health. Although I have some good days, most I spend in pain with limited mobility. When I came out of work, I became very depressed – I had always worked, but was no longer able to. Mentally I want to return to work, but I am very limited in what I am able to do.

“The Job Centre encouraged me to attend some form of training, and I chose CPO (Creating Positive Opportunities), as it was local to me. The staff were very supportive and gave me advice and guidance as to my next steps.

“Whilst I have been with CPO, I have been preparing to return to work when I am able to, and I have gained some current employability skills and a qualification in mathematics. I attended every week and received praise and encouragement which was very much appreciated.

“After a short break I referred myself back to complete an English qualification. I currently attend one day a week, working towards my Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification. I feel much happier in myself, and I look forward to my English sessions. My tutor feels I have really come out of my shell and communicate more naturally rather than being forced into conversation. I am currently weighing up my options for when I complete my English early next year, if I can find suitable employment I want to return to work.”
