More than 300 people came to Digger Day on the Pier Gardens site last Saturday (25 July).
Maylim, the contractors for Pier Gardens, opened up a small section of the site to families for the day.
Having seen the interest at one of their other sites in the UK, the aim was to introduce children to construction sites, in a safe manner.
Children were welcome to sit in many machines, from diggers to dump trucks. A simulator was also provided by Flannery Plant Hire for people to have a go at driving a truck around a construction site on screen.
Tom Taylor, Project Manager at Maylim, said: “It was a great day, with lots of families coming along, and while the adults were chatting about the site, the works and what’s being built, the children, under supervision, of course, were able to sit in various different machines we have on site and feel what they are like. It’s brilliant to see young people sparked with enthusiasm and building sites!”
Cllr Tanya Brasted, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Tourism and the Visitor Economy at the Council, said: “What a great day! I’d like to thank Maylim for opening up this area for families to come and experience what’s going on in Pier Gardens. It would be great if we could do this again and show the site to more people and it’s something we’ll have a chat with Maylim about, see if it’s feasible over the summer.”
Also as part of Digger Day, local artist, Dogma, created some unique designs which were made into stickers and colouring sheets for children to take away. These can now be downloaded from the Pier Gardens website, www.nelincs.gov.uk/pier-gardens.
