More than potholes: The essential work of our highway’s operatives

North East Lincolnshire Council’s highways operatives play a vital role in keeping our roads safe, maintaining essential infrastructure and helping communities stay connected. Yet much of the hard work they carry out every day often goes unnoticed.

Working outdoors in all weather conditions, from freezing winter mornings to periods of extreme summer heat, the highways teams are on the network throughout the year, responding to issues and carrying out both emergency and planned maintenance.

Their work involves far more than simply filling potholes. They repair and maintain roads, footpaths and kerbs, replace damaged ironwork such as manhole covers and gully gratings and install and repair highway signs, bollards and pedestrian guard railing. They also respond to urgent situations including flooding, road traffic incidents, and highway defects that could pose a risk to the travelling public.

The Council adopts a “Right First Time” approach to its road and pothole repairs. This ensures that the most appropriate repair method is chosen to deliver a durable, cost-effective and sustainable solution. A range of repair techniques is used depending on the type, size and condition of the defect.  These include thermal road repair technology, which heats and recycles the existing road surface in situ, reducing waste and minimising the need for new materials. Other repairs involve more traditional methods, where the damaged section of road or footpath is excavated and replaced with new material to provide a long-lasting repair. By applying the right treatment to each defect, the Council aims to maximise the lifespan of repairs, minimise disruption to road users and deliver the best possible value for residents.

The role of a highways operative often involves working near moving traffic and operating specialist machinery, making safety a constant priority. Every job requires careful planning, teamwork and vigilance to ensure work can be carried out safely and efficiently.

Whilst roadworks can sometimes cause temporary delays, they are essential to maintaining and improving the highway network for everyone who uses it. Behind every repair, resurfaced road and maintained footpath is a team of dedicated people working hard to deliver an essential public service.

Councillor Paul Batson, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Infrastructure and Transport, said: “Our highways teams work incredibly hard, often in challenging conditions and away from the public spotlight. Their work is essential to keeping our roads safe, supporting our communities and ensuring people can get where they need to go. Whether repairing potholes or responding to emergencies, they make a real difference every single day, and I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment.”
