A new sports facility has opened in Immingham, giving people of all ages the opportunity to get out and get active.

The ‘PlayZone’ multi-use games area (MUGA) on Roval Drive, nearest to Coombs Brigg Primary Academy, includes a 30 by 20 metre pitch, basketball hoops, benches, goals, fencing and LED floodlighting so the facility can be used all year round.

The emphasis is on ‘free to use’ community access, with an online booking system to ensure fairness and safety.  The PlayZone will also offer the opportunity for more formal sessions to be held, where groups can book for a small fee.

Managed by Immingham Town Council, the project has been made possible thanks to a partnership approach from the Football Foundation, North East Lincolnshire Council, the FA and Immingham Town Council – giving residents a safe, welcoming space to enjoy.

In April 2025, a PlayZone was opened on Grant Thorold Park in Grimsby, with another opening at Kent Street in September. It’s hoped the Immingham facility will build on these positive improvements to local facilities.

“We’re thrilled to be opening our third PlayZone and offering something new to the people of Immingham,” said Councillor Bob Callison, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Culture and Tourism.

“It’s important that people have spaces to come to and use however they want – that freedom is essential in keeping people active. This is a great addition to the town and I’ve no doubt it’ll be well used.”

This is all part of the Council’s wider objectives to help keep the borough active through the Move Together movement. From throwing a basketball about to simply kicking a ball – it all helps to build upon people’s fitness, creating a healthier lifestyle.

Andy Hopkins, Director of Operations at Immingham Town Council, said “The Playzone is a great addition for our Town and will help support and promote all types of sports for all ages. The Council was delighted to provide match-funding for the project and would like to thank North East Lincolnshire Council officers and the Football Foundation for making this happen”.

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA and Government – to transform the quality of grassroots facilities in England by delivering projects like this across the country.

“Good quality playing facilities have a transformative impact on physical and mental health and play an important role in bringing people together and strengthening local communities.

“We’re delighted that the local community in Immingham will now be able to enjoy all these benefits thanks to the new facilities at Roval Drive.”
