North East Lincolnshire Council marks Fuel Poverty Awareness Day

8:00 am, Wednesday, 26th November 2025 - 4 minutes ago

General

Today is National Energy Action’s Fuel Poverty Awareness Day.

The aim is to raise awareness on what it means to be living in fuel poverty and the importance of living in a warm and safe home. This year, they will focus on children living in fuel poverty, and how living in a damp home can put their health and comfort at risk.

Due to the energy crisis that has been on-going for over four years, many households now struggle with debt and are stretching household budgets meaning they cannot always afford to keep warm and healthy.

The Home Energy Team at North East Lincolnshire Council are encouraging residents to get in touch for advice and support if you are finding it difficult to keep your home warm or cover the cost of your energy bills.

Energy advice tips?

  • Do not leave electrical appliances on standby, unplug them when they are not in use
  • Switch to energy saving light bulbs and turn lights off when leaving a room
  • Cook with microwaves or air fryers where possible instead of the oven
  • Only fill the kettle with the water you need for a hot drink
  • Layer up your clothing when you are cold
  • Ensure your property is insulated – small measures can make a big difference
  • Take monthly meter readings and submit to your fuel supplier (if you do not have a smart meter)
  • Wash clothes at a lower temperature
  • Try to limit the amount of time you spend in the shower
  • Try not to block radiators with curtains or furniture
  • Look at switching tariffs
