Postal voter? You might have to reapply to keep your postal vote this year

Councillors and democracy

Did you know, there are around 16,000 people vote by post in North East Lincolnshire. It’s one of the easiest ways to have your say in things like local and UK parliamentary elections.

There are local council elections in each of the 15 wards in North East Lincolnshire this year on 7 May.

You can easily register to vote by post on the Government Website: www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote.

Voting by post means that you will receive a voting pack through the post for you to complete at home, in your own time, and return the pack with a pre-paid envelope, rather than have to visit one of the polling stations in person on 7 May.

To register to vote by post, you’ll need your personal details, your National Insurance number, and an image of your signature on plain white paper.  These details are stored securely, so that at voting time, they can be matched with the information you provide, and your vote can be validated and counted.

Following changes introduced by the Elections Act 2022, postal voters are now required to reapply for their postal vote every three years. Postal voters who applied for a postal vote on or before 30 January 2024 would have received a letter or email from North East Lincolnshire Council’s elections team to remind them to renew their vote.

There are still around 5000 people that didn’t reapply, and now need to apply again to have a postal vote.

If you are registered to vote, and would like to vote by post, you can apply online at any time by visiting www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

The deadline for applying for a new postal vote for the elections in May is 5pm on 21 April 2026.
