Renewables

We’re key players in the renewable energy revolution.

Our environmental vision

Offshore wind operations and maintenance is already established as a hub in Grimsby, but this is about expanding our offer, growing it, and benefiting other supply chains in the area. We’re a council and an area which is hugely willing to work to bring the benefits a successful local energy sector can deliver for local communities.

  • By 2032, the region will be internationally recognised as the UK’s leading region for low-carbon energy and renewable energy.
  • We will develop a range of renewable solutions to regenerate the borough, making us less reliant on traditional energy.
  • We will establish world class education, training and research facilities for the energy and renewables sectors, here in NEL.
  • Our economy will benefit from the renewable energy sector, creating high-skilled, long-term and stable employment.

Humber Renewables

The emergence of the Humber renewables sector, and the profile that brings to the region, provides an immediate opportunity to deliver wider benefits for our community. The council has a key role in enabling and delivering this agenda and ensuring those benefits are realised locally.

Leaders in UK offshore renewables

Grimsby serves as the central operations and maintenance (O&M) hub for the UK’s offshore renewables sector, providing swift access to both domestic and European markets.

Wind farms and market connectivity

Grimsby is front and centre in supporting wind farm development. Investments in offshore wind began around 2011 with the Lynn and Inner Dowsing windfarms and the area continues to grow as further projects are developed. Siemens, Centrica, Eon and Ørsted as operators have committed to a long-term future at the Port of Grimsby.

The Port of Immingham provides offshore wind businesses with deep-water port facilities and frequent ro-ro and container services to Northern European and Scandinavian industry centres.

Humberside Airport is the UK’s 4th largest air transport helicopter base, with services supporting Hornsea and other North Sea wind farms.

80% of North Sea power zones and 60% of the European market are accessible within 12 hours’ steaming time of Grimsby.

Renewables partnership

Formed in 2022, Humber Marine and Renewables is the result of a merger between Team Humber Marine Alliance and Grimsby Renewables Partnership.

Both organisations believed that a collective voice would attract new investment, opportunities in the supply chain for local business and help put the region in a global spotlight. Humber Marine and Renewables has more than 200 members who benefit from the activities of the organisation and the collaborative platform it provides. The organisation is growing month on month and organises and attends regular events to provide new opportunities in the supply chain for local business and attract new investment.
