Step Up To Social Work is a 14-month, full-time training programme for talented graduates and career changers to become the next generation of children’s social workers.

It includes financial support alongside training and is designed for people who want to become a social worker but do not have a degree in social work.

Successful applicants train through a combination of academic study and hands on social work experience in a local authority.

Eligible applicants will be individuals with experience of working with children, young people and families, and who can demonstrate emotional resilience and potential for success.

“More and more social workers are joining our incredible team. For those who don’t have a degree in Social Work, the Step Up to Social Work programme is an ideal route into this hugely rewarding profession.

“The programme is intensive and challenging, but it will change your life and push you to achieve things you never thought possible.”

Ann-Marie Matson, NELC’s Director of Children’s Services, added:

“Social work is without doubt the most rewarding career you could wish for. I’m immensely proud of our current cohort of Step Up To Social Work students, they’re an inspiration and they’ve all secured jobs with us. After 30 years in social work, I’m as passionate as ever about doing my absolute best for children, young people and their families. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to train for a career in social work, it will change your life.”

A Step Up To Social Work student who joined the programme last time, said:

“This experience has been transformative. I’ve learned so much and have been pushed far beyond my comfort zone, doing things I once thought were beyond my abilities.

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that I’m more resilient than I ever imagined. This journey has strengthened my confidence in my practice and reaffirmed my passion for making a difference in the lives of children and families.

“I chose social work to empower families, foster connections, and create positive, lasting change. I’m excited to continue growing and learning as I move forward on this journey.”

Isabelle Trowler, Chief Social Worker for Children and Families, said:

“It is excellent to see the quality of the hundreds of graduates who qualify as social workers through the Step Up programme, and encouraged to see them start out on a long-term career in social work.

“Our profession is highly challenging, but highly rewarding, and Step Up is developing a highly skilled workforce ready to make a genuine positive impact on people’s lives.”
