This summer many children and young people will be enjoying summer clubs and activities while they spend their time off school trying new experiences and branching out.

The Trin Centre is an activity provider in our area that has carved out a name for itself as an inclusive organisation. It received numerous positive messages of appreciation for this year’s NELincs SEND Awards. In June it was named the winner of the SEND Friendly Business Award—a recognition that celebrates its unwavering commitment to inclusion, compassion, and community impact.

Described by one parent as “a beacon of inclusion and compassion,” The Trin Centre has become a lifeline for families across the region. Through a wide range of free clubs and activities, the centre offers a safe, nurturing environment where children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can thrive. Whether it’s cookery, inclusive sports, creative arts, or youth clubs, every session is designed to build confidence, foster friendships, and promote life skills.

The award comes as no surprise to the parents, professionals, and young people who nominated The Trin. Testimonials poured in, praising the centre’s staff for their dedication, empathy, and creativity.

People shared their personal experiences of challenges like anxiety, bullying, dyslexia and autism and how the support of The Trin and their staff has opened doors for them, given them friendship, a community and confidence.

One young person said: “They helped me so much with my anxiety, they have been supportive and created a safe place for me to go. I have a lot of fun and don’t have to worry about getting bullied”

Another young person said: “The Trin has helped me so much since I’ve been going. The staff always help me when I have problems at school or with my friends and they always give great advice and helped me through a tough time. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Willo, Joe, Chloe and Kerry because they do so much. I might have additional needs, but they don’t treat me any different but understand when I’m angry or need some time out. The Trin has saved my life and I love being a part of the gang.”

A parent said: “My son has been going to the Trin for a while now and he has come on so much from the kid who would only spend time in his bedroom. He struggles with dyslexia and has autism so does not speak to many people, but since going to Trin he has really come on with his social skills and this is thanks to their amazing staff.”

Councillor Cracknell, Portfolio Holder for Children and Education said: “We’re proud to be able to raise awareness of inclusive activities.

“We’d love to be able to get the word out to more families about all the fabulous, dedicated organisations in our community who strive to be welcoming to those with additional needs. We encourage everyone to share their positive experiences and cast nominations for the 2026 SEND Awards when nominations launch later this year.

More than just activities The Trin Centre isn’t just a place to play—it’s a place to heal, grow, and belong. Staff members are praised for their consistent support, checking in with children who struggle with anxiety or learning difficulties and offering a safe space to talk and be heard.

With countless nominations and heartfelt stories, The Trin Centre has proven itself to be far more than an activity provider—it’s a cornerstone of the community. The SEND Friendly Business Award is a testament to the centre’s inclusive ethos and the tireless efforts of its staff.
