A Grimsby organisation is proud of what they’ve achieved following the transformation of Riverhead Square.
Grimsby in Bloom have been working tirelessly to populate the new community space with bright colours through a range of plants and flowers.
Funded by the Council, the group have spent the past two weeks preparing, planting and watering the area to make it a landscape to enjoy. This work follows on from the groups fantastic work to introduce planters and the greening up of Victoria Street, also funded by the Council.
For Elaine and the team, it’s involved a lot of hard work, but the end result has made it all worth it. “We are so proud of Riverhead Square and so are the public. We’ve had loads of positive comments whilst we’ve been here and everyone seems to love it.
“It’s not been easy going and when we started there was a lot of preparation work to be done before we actually started moving things round and putting new plants in.
“Having said that, all the hard work has been worth it to achieve what we have and the team have been amazing. We just can’t wait to see what it’ll look like when everything has bloomed.”
To give it the best appearance possible, Grimsby in Bloom have selected a range of colourful flowers and grouped them together to give a striking visual to those sitting in the square whilst chatting to friends or enjoying a coffee.
“As well as plants and flowers, we’ve added in some Thyme around the edge to give the place a lovely aromatic smell. Everything combined will create a great image, but also the perfect home for all the wildlife we have here.”
She added: “I think this will look lovely alongside the rest of the regeneration works going on in the town centre.
“Obviously, the town is an urban area, but this nature aspect will be great for the town. These sorts of landscapes make people feel better and make you think “wow”. I’ve no doubt this will bring more people into the town centre too.”
Elaine also wanted to say thank you to the Council for making everything possible. “We are just a small community group and they have given us an opportunity to show what we can do.
“I can’t thank the Council enough for involving us as a partner in this project, they’ve helped us make the town centre what it is today, a place we can all be proud of.”
Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Economy, Regeneration, Devolution and Skills, Councillor Philip Jackson, added: “This is a remarkable achievement that will benefit every resident and visitor in the town centre.
“I would like to thank Grimsby in Bloom for all their hard work and for partnering the Council in our efforts to make the town centre a vibrant and more welcoming place to be.
“However, these initiatives are just one part of the wider scale regeneration occurring in Grimsby. The demolition phase of the Freshney Place redevelopment scheme is well underway with a brighter future on the horizon for the town.”
“This is such a positive time for North East Lincolnshire and I’m proud to see other organisations joining us on this journey.”
