As part of ongoing preparation works for the regeneration and development of the disused West Haven Mill site on Garth Lane, an existing footbridge to access the building will be refurbished ready for future use.

It was announced in 2019 that this historic building will have an exciting new future as an OnSide Youth Facility, recently named “Horizon”.

The converted Grade II listed West Haven Maltings in the centre of Grimsby will become home to the new Youth Zone. When complete by the end of 2022, a ‘new haven’ will be created for thousands of young people, providing them with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to, 7 days a week.

As reported, it will provide over 20 activities every day including indoor climbing, sports, arts, drama, music, media and cooking as well as employability and enterprise programmes, which will see specialist youth workers and partners support young people.

The works to the footbridge will start on site on Wednesday 3 Feband will take approximately 12 weeks to complete. There should be little impact to the footpath along Frederick Ward Way.

Scaffolding will be erected around the bridge and a weatherproof cover will be placed over the bridge to enable the refurbishment works to take place.

The bridge will be cleaned, painted and any required repairs carried out to bring the bridge back into a condition where it can be used as an access point to the youth facility once it opens.

When all the works are completed, a safe and sound structure can be handed over to OnSide in the Spring to progress with their development plans, subject to planning approval.
