Young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have once again played a leading role in shaping the 2026 SEND Awards.
Members of the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG) met on Thursday 23 April at Blundell Park to review nominations and select the winners.
This year we had 407 nominations from members across the community.
They highlight powerful stories of resilience, enthusiasm, commitment and positive attitudes, celebrating young people who continue to thrive and achieve despite facing additional challenges.
These inspiring stories reflect the strength, compassion and determination found across the local SEND community.
Reflecting on the strong will of one child one nomination read, “They prove every day that determination can overcome even the greatest challenges.”
Recognising their child’s educational setting a parent wrote, “Their commitment doesn’t stop at the school gate — they support families through the hardest moments too.”
Praising an activity provider who has gone out of their way to be inclusive, one person said, “They have created a safe, welcoming community where families no longer feel alone.”
YPAG is an engagement, voice and influence group for young people with additional needs.
Members carefully considered every nomination, using their lived experience to decide which individuals, groups and organisations best demonstrate inclusion, understanding and meaningful impact.
Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Childrens Services at North East Lincolnshire Council said, “Having young people involved in choosing the winners ensures the SEND Awards truly reflect what matters to those with lived experience. Their insight brings authenticity, fairness and heart to the process.”
Winners will be contacted shortly and invited to the celebration taking place at Grimsby Town Hall on Thursday 18 June at 5:30pm.
