Early engagement identifies protected cycle lane for key route in the borough

Following the first round of engagement with local cyclists, residents, businesses and colleges, a protected cycle lane stretching between Clee Road at Isaac’s Hill Roundabout, along Weelsby Road and up to the Fryston Corner junction is being considered.

A protected cycle lane will address concerns raised in the initial survey by creating a dedicated and protected space for cyclists, while improving road safety and the overall cycling experience on this well-used route.

The scheme is made possible due to the width of the road allowing for the introduction of a protected cycle lane alongside the main carriageway and without losing the existing on-street parking provision.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “Our first round of engagement has gone well, and we have received a large amount of feedback. Thank you to those who contributed to the survey, this has allowed engineers and transport officials to develop a scheme that can meet the needs of local people and address their concerns when cycling in the area.

“As we approach the second round of engagement, it is vital we continue to see support for this scheme to allow us to secure the funding from Department for Transport by meeting their engagement requirements and demonstrating clear support for the scheme.”

Engineers are currently finalising the detailed design for the scheme and will be engaging directly with affected residents and businesses in the coming weeks.

Guidance from the Department for Transport, the funder for the scheme, has recently been updated and the scheme will only be progressed subject to the completion of the engagement process and identifying a clear need and support for this scheme by local people.

The first round of engagement focused on the wider route which also included Laceby Road, up to Bradley Crossroads roundabout. The survey identified a greater need and support for improvements on the stretch towards Cleethorpes. Further funding opportunities will be considered for the Laceby Road section in the future.
