Bins, waste and recycling

Fed up of seeing chewing gum on the streets? The gum-busters are here to help.

Equipped with their new proton pack look alike, Street Scene Operatives are out and about cleaning Grimsby town centre and the rest of the borough.

The new chewing gum cleaner is the latest edition to the Council’s equipment used to keep the streets of our towns clean and welcoming.

Using a non-chemical solution, it uses a mix of soap solution and the scrubbing brush at the end of the spout to remove the discarded gum.

For Dave Hall, it’s just another way the team can help make North East Lincolnshire a better place to live and visit.

“It means we can get rid of something that is blighting the streets. It annoys everyone so we’re glad to be able to help in whatever way we can.”

He added: “It’s also a much safer way to get rid of the chewing gum. When we used a dry ice method in the past, we had to have someone sweeping up behind us and cordon off the area, but now we just need the machine and someone to use it.”

It’s hoped the machine can be used in other parts of the borough in time but is currently being trialled in Grimsby town centre. “You can use it on any sort of pavement and I’m sure in time it’ll be used in other places,” added Dave.

“You’re making a visible difference too which makes me feel good about the job I’m doing. Anything that can make the town a nicer place to be and bring more people into the centre is a brilliant idea in my eyes.”

Councillor, Bob Callison, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Energy Security, said: “This is a brilliant investment not only for Grimsby town centre, but for the whole borough.

“We’re doing our best to clear away the discarded chewing gum, but people shouldn’t litter in the first place. If you want to dispose of anything, use one of the many bins provided.
