The Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) at North East Lincolnshire place is proud to announce that we have exceeded our target for annual health checks for people with learning disabilities.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in improving health outcomes for individuals who face additional barriers to accessing healthcare.
The NHS national target for completing health checks for people from age 14 on their GP’s Learning Disability Register is 75%
In North East Lincolnshire, 82% of all the people on the registers had their health check in 2024-25.
The target was achieved for both the 14–17-year-old and 18–25-year-old age groups.
Annual health checks are a vital part of staying well, allowing individuals to discuss their health with a doctor or nurse, identify potential concerns early, and receive the support they need.
These checks are available to anyone aged 14 or over who is on their GP’s Learning Disability Register.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, participation in annual health checks declined, but thanks to the dedication of GP practices, Care Plus Group’s Adult Learning Disability Services, Focus Adult Social Work and colleagues in children’s and adults’ services across the SEND system, awareness has been raised, and more people are now accessing this essential service. Efforts have focused on informing individuals and families about the importance of these checks, how to access them, and the benefits of attending every year—even when feeling well.
People with learning disabilities can face additional barriers to accessing healthcare and have statistically worse rates of ill health than the general population.
That is why getting your health check every year is important.
There are lots of other reasons too, including:
- Doctors may spot symptoms you are not aware of
- Getting better treatment – for example new medication
- Talking to your doctor about anything worrying you
- Getting advice on lifestyle choices, such as your diet
- Being more in control of your health and your body.
What happens during an Annual Health Check?
An Annual Health Check normally lasts for up to one hour. You can bring someone with you to the appointment. During the check, the doctor or nurse will:
- Check your body, for example weight, heart, and blood pressure
- Take blood and urine samples (if you are happy to)
- Talk about your medicines, and your life. For example, they might ask about what food you eat, and how you feel.
Councillor Margaret Cracknell, portfolio holder for children and education at North East Lincolnshire Council, praised the hard work of all involved, stating:
“Meeting and exceeding our target is a testament to the commitment of our teams and the community.
“Annual health checks empower individuals with learning disabilities to take charge of their health, and we encourage families to support their children from age 14 in developing independence around seeking healthcare as they prepare for adulthood.”
Katie Brown, Director of Adult Services said, “Reaching 82% of annual health checks for people with a learning disability is a proud moment for North East Lincolnshire.
“It shows what’s possible when we work together—with GP practices, parent carers, individuals and professionals all playing a part.
“This achievement takes us one step closer to addressing barriers and building a healthier future ensuring everyone gets the support they need to thrive.”
