Two more people have been sentenced partly thanks to the invaluable help of the Council’s CCTV system in Humberside Police investigations.
The individuals were found guilty of various crimes such as theft of a vehicle and assault by beating.
The £2.25 million security system was introduced in 2023 and has been invaluable in helping combat crime, especially in Grimsby Town Centre.
The control room works to capture events as they happen, but also stores footage to be used retrospectively by emergency services as evidence. Alternatively, the cameras can be used to monitor an ongoing situation should they be requested to by Humberside Police.
Ultimately, this partnership working is aiming to create a safer borough with a joined up approach that works effectively to tackling crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.
Between 2023 and 2025, crime reduced by 5% in the town centre over the with huge reductions in Anti-Social Behaviour and alcohol related crimes, thanks to the joined up approach from the Council and Police.
Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) reduced by 14%; alcohol related ASB was down by 51%. Additionally, violence leading to injury has reduced by 23% and bike thefts by over 45%.
The system and close working relationship with Humberside Police ensures that those who commit crimes continue to be brought to justice. When an incident occurs, operators can alert the Police for an immediate response or provide further video evidence to support an investigation.
In the most recent cases, one man pleaded guilty to assault by beating at a hearing at Grimsby Magistrates Court on 11th June this year. The case has subsequently ben adjourned for sentencing.
In the other case, relating to a hearing on 23rd June at Grimsby Youth Court, a child pleaded Guilty to a number of matters, including Attempt Theft of Motor Vehicle, Theft of Motor Vehicle and Theft of Pedal Cycle. CCTV supported swift justice and the child being sentenced accordingly and supported by the Youth Justice Service.
