Council staff and partners have come together to make Christmas a little brighter for local Care Leavers and their children, donating more than 200 gifts through a special festive initiative.
Tags representing Care Leavers and their children were placed on Christmas trees across council buildings. Staff from the council and the Integrated Care Board (ICB) selected tags and bought thoughtful gifts, ensuring every young person and child received something special this festive season, including a newborn baby boy, just one week old.
Care Leavers are young people aged 18 to 24 who have previously been in care. Across the UK, there are around 80,000 children in care at any one time, and thousands leave care each year to start independent lives, often without the family support many of us take for granted. Research shows that Care Leavers are more likely to experience loneliness and isolation, particularly during the festive period, which can be a difficult time for those without a strong support network.
Councillor Margaret Cracknell, Portfolio Holder for Children and Education, added:
“Leaving care can be daunting, and this time of year can feel especially hard for those without a family support system. We hope these gifts serve as a small token of care and kindness, showing our Care Leavers that they are not alone.”
Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services, said:
“I want to thank every member of staff from both within the council and our partners who got behind this initiative. Your generosity means so much to our Care Leavers and their families. These gifts are more than presents, they’re a reminder that our young people are valued, supported and loved.”
This initiative is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting Care Leavers as they transition into adulthood, helping them feel connected and supported in all elements of their lives.
