Relive the life of Rita the Barmaid, make a cool craft and enjoy a discount in the Galley Café.
The Fishing Heritage Centre’s Children’s Day is packed full of fun for all the family to give you something to do this half term.
On Wednesday, 27 May, discover and learn about Grimsby’s rich history and heritage in the museum and take on board, literally, all the information you can about the famous Ross Tiger trawler.
If that wasn’t enough, there will also be a seagull trail with a chance to win a family pass for a whole year. When you’re done having fun, you’ll also be able to grab a cake and coffee in the galley café and enjoy 10% off!
The most surreal part of the day will be hosted by Sara Beasley and a group of actors from The Shenanigans.
Sara has prepared speeches and performances about three characters that can be found around the museum – giving an insight into what life was like for the females of Grimsby during its busiest era.
- Phyliss the net braider – Phyliss is busy in her back yard braiding the nets for the trawlermen to catch their fish. Listen to her tell of her early working life and how she continued working from home once she had her son to care for.
- Rhona from the Chippy – The year is 1953. Rhona loves a good chat, so while the boss is busy, she’ll take a break and go through all that’s been happening in Cleethorpes to date – it’s been a momentous year in more ways than one!
- Rita the Barmaid – Rita welcomes you into the Freeman Arms, but while the barrel of beer gets changed, she’ll regale you with tales of the 3-day millionaires and what they get up to on their 3 days back on land.
Sara is thrilled to be taking part in the day and bringing these characters to life. She said: “It’s been a while since I wrote the speeches for the net braider, the barmaid and the chip shop worker so it is with great pleasure and excitement I’ve been asked to resume them with the help of two local professional actors, Alice Murray and Molly Charnley.
“We are looking forward to bringing the characters ‘to life’ as we meet the families that come to visit the centre on this special Children’s Day event!”
