Major improvement work is set to take place on Yarborough Road to improve safety and reduce the need for more works in this busy area in the future.
North East Lincolnshire Council will be carrying out road and footpath reconstruction works between Grange Walk and the Market Hotel Roundabout from Monday 13 July 2026 until Saturday 24 October 2026.
As part of the scheme, changes to the road layout have been designed to enhance safety for all road users. The improvements will increase visibility for drivers exiting Cross Coates Road, making it easier to see approaching traffic on Yarborough Road and helping to reduce the potential for vehicle collisions.
Although these works will inevitably cause some temporary disruption, the project has been carefully planned to bring together a number of essential highway improvements within one programme of works. Delivering these elements at the same time will reduce the need for additional roadworks in the future, helping to minimise longer-term disruption for residents, businesses and road users. The main closures have been planned for overnight or weekends.
The scheme will include:
- Reconstruction of sections of road and footpath
- Changes to the road layout
- Replacement of damaged kerbs
- Drainage improvements
- New road markings
As part of the project, the junction of Norman Road and Yarborough Road will be closed to traffic throughout the duration of the works.
The work to be completed in phases
Phase 1 – Civil engineering works and footpath reconstruction
Phase 1 will run from 13 July to 16 October and will include junction realignment works, replacement of damaged kerbs and drainage features, and footpath reconstruction.
Phase 1A – Grange Walk to Tesco car park entrance
Works will be completed in sections and may require:
- Temporary footpath closures
- Bus stop suspensions
- Side road closures
- Temporary suspension of on-street parking
These measures will allow two-way traffic to remain in place on Yarborough Road wherever possible.
Phase 1B – Tesco car park entrance to Market Hotel Roundabout
This phase will require a full road closure between the Tesco car park entrance and Market Hotel Roundabout during the following weekends:
- 7pm Friday 21 August to 4am Monday 24 August
- 7pm Friday 4 September to 4am Monday 7 September
Phase 2 – Road reconstruction and road markings
Phase 2A – Deep road reconstruction
Taking place between 28 September and 16 October, these works will be carried out overnight under full road closures from 7pm to 4am.
The work will be completed in three sections:
- Section 1: Fannystone Road to Market Hotel Roundabout (28 September – 2 October)
- Section 2: Cross Coates Road to Fannystone Road (5 October – 9 October)
- Section 3: Grange Walk to Cross Coates Road (12 October – 16 October)
Some Phase 1 works will continue alongside these activities.
Phase 2B – Final surfacing and road markings
The final stage of the project will take place from 19 October to 24 October under overnight road closures between Grange Walk and the Market Hotel Roundabout from 7pm to 4am.
Parking and access
During the works, on-street parking will be suspended within and around active work areas. Residents and visitors are asked not to park on the road or path within the works zone to help maintain safety and avoid delays.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.
Bus service changes
During overnight road closures, the Stagecoach Service 4 will divert via Littlefield Lane, Chelmsford Avenue and Cambridge Road.
Outside of the closures, services will operate as normal.
