Business and investment

Have you ever thought about starting your own business?

If you’ve ever considered working for yourself, North East Lincolnshire Council’s InvestNEL team and the Business Hive are offering free, no-obligation advice.

You don’t need a business plan, any experience, or even a fully formed idea. Just an interest in finding out more.

The drop-in session will be held at the Careers Café in Freshney Place on 21st August from 9:30am to 12pm – marking World Entrepreneurs’ Day, a national celebration of business owners.

Here in North East Lincolnshire, 87% of all businesses are micro businesses that employ between 0 and 9 people. These smaller businesses make up the majority of our local business base and play a vital role in the area’s economy, creating jobs and providing goods and services that keeps spending in the local community. Every one of them started with someone taking that first step.

At the session you’ll be able to speak with local business advisors; Paul Slade, Sophie Surfleet, and Gina Waterhouse from the Business Hive as well as Mathew Thompson and Donna Blakey from the InvestNEL team who can answer your questions on things like:

  • Getting started and what to do first
  • Funding and the costs involved
  • Registering a business and the legal basics
  • Where to go for ongoing support

There’s no need to book and no cost to attend. You can come along at any point during the morning and stay for as long as you need.

Councillor Oliver Freeston, Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Strategic Renewal, Delivery and Place Leadership, spoke about the importance of sessions like these for residents: “Local businesses are at the heart of our economy and our communities, and many of them started with nothing more than an idea and the determination to take that first step. Encouraging more people to start and grow their own businesses is vital to making North East Lincolnshire an even better place to live, work and invest.

“Whether you have a clear business idea or are simply curious about what working for yourself could look like, I’d encourage you to come along to the Careers Café and speak to the experts. The advice is free, informal and could be the start of an exciting new opportunity.”
