A trio of young boys have been rewarded for their Beach Safety video telling the public how to be safe when visiting Cleethorpes.
Taking part in Humberside Police’s Lifestyle programme, Oliver, Jacob and Harry have been spending their Summer holidays filming on the seafront.
Teaching people what to do if they get stuck in the mud or if the tide is coming in, the video has now reached over 26,000 views on YouTube.
To say thank you for helping spread the message, Cleethorpes Beach Safety team invited the boys down to get a behind the scenes tour of their day-to-day life.
First, they learnt about throw lines which are stationed all around the resort. These are lengths of rope with a bag on the end that can be used to help people who become stuck in the water.
Sadly, Harry couldn’t make it, but Oliver and Jacob took turns in using the throw line and practiced what they would do if they ever needed to use one for real.
Should you ever need to use one, remember:
- Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard first
- Open the box and take the throw bag
- Throw the line past the person in the water
- Tell them to hold the rope
- Pull them steadily to safety
Following this, they got a turn in the beach bike – which many may know as the beach buggy. Used to warn people of incoming tides, the vehicle is equipped with an alarm and siren to make sure those who may be too far out from the shore can hear the warning.
Practicing their own announcements, the pair of them competed to see who could shout the loudest on the speakers – enjoying every second of it.
Jacob said: “We’ve spent the Summer working on a beach safety video and raising money for charities through it; we decided to support Beach Safety and the RNLI.”
Oliver added: “We spent the day filming down on the beach to create the video and now it has 26,000 views.
“The video looks at how to stay safe in the water and what to do if you get into trouble.”
The pair also had a great time getting to see exactly what the Beach Safety team get up to. “It was absolutely brilliant, it felt like a one in a million chance for us,” said Jacob.
“When you pressed the buttons on the beach buggy it was so loud.”
