The next major milestone in the work to a key town centre building has been reached.
The contract for the removal of asbestos in Grimsby Central Library has now been let to professional asbestos removal company, Rhodar Industrial Services Ltd.
Initial mobilisation work will start from Monday 7 September on site, with main works starting in October to remove the dangerous asbestos from the space.
As part of this work, New Street will be closed off to traffic from Osborne Street from 6 October for the duration of the works to allow the contractor to have a safe working area for their site, and for the containers to remove the asbestos.
The pavement against the library on New Street will also be closed off, but pedestrians will be able to use New Street.
There will also be times where there will be further localised closures on the pavement around the library on Osborne St and George St. This will be for a safe working area for an access platform to be sited when work to the windows is being done.
The regeneration of the library remains a key part of the wider Grimsby Town Centre Masterplan.
The appointment of a specialist contractor to carry out asbestos removal marks a significant milestone in the future of Grimsby Central Library, paving the way for the next stages of planning, including the development of a full business case to support its long-term regeneration.
Following a recommendation from the Libraries Select Committee, a programme of workshops with interested parties will be held to shape the future use of Grimsby Central Library building.
The aim is to work collaboratively with local people and partners to assess the potential uses of the building to design a modern library service that meets the current and future needs of the borough.
The first workshop will take place on 15 September for invited stakeholders. Further drop-in sessions and engagement opportunities will be shared in due course.
