North East Lincolnshire council is urging people to make the most of the free support on offer at locations in Immingham, Grimsby, and Cleethorpes, to quit smoking during Stoptober.
Research shows that if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you arefive times more likely to quit for good, making Stoptober and the month of October an ideal time to quit.
There is a range of free support available to people across the area, including expert face-to-face and telephone support from your local stop smoking service, which can also provide access to a range of quit-smoking aids, including vapes, inhalators and stop smoking medications.
Smokers in North East Lincolnshire can also access six months of free support through the Smoke Free app. The app provides 24/7 support from a real stop smoking advisor, as well as practical tools to keep you motivated, like keeping track of how your health is improving and how much money you save.
Portfolio holder for health, wellbeing and adult social care, Councillor Nigel Oliver, commented: “You are three times more likely to quit for good with expert support, so we’d urge anyone thinking of quitting to make the most of the free help on offer.
“We have excellent services provided by the Wellbeing Team – it’s non-judgmental and can really make your quit smoking journey easier.”
Dr Emma Hardy, GP and Public Health Specialty Registrar in Yorkshire and Humber, said: “I want people to know that they don’t have to tackle quitting alone. There are different ways to get support, from digital tools to free support from a stop smoking advisor – it’s about finding what works for you and fits into your life.
“If you’ve tried before, you’re not starting from scratch: you’ve learnt something about what works and what’s difficult, and every attempt counts. Stoptober is a chance to build on that and take another step, with support to make it easier this time.”
