Streets, travel and parking

As part of the ongoing major improvement works on Yarborough Road, the council has identified some additional work that needs to be carried out on underground utilities at the Cross Coates Road junction.

This means that phase two of the works will now begin on Tuesday 10 November.

From the Monday 12 October 2026 until Friday 20 November 2026, a 24 hour road closure will be in place on Cross Coates Road between Yarborough Road and Elm Avenue to carry out junction realignment woks and underground utilities works by both Cadent Gas and BT.

During this period, 24 hour temporary traffic control will be in place on Yarborough Road from Monday 19 October until Sunday 1 November.

More information about the full scheme and revised programme can be found below.

Major improvement works began on Monday 13 July 2026 on Yarborough Road to improve safety and reduce the need for more works in this busy area in the future.

As part of the scheme, changes to the road layout have been designed to enhance safety for all road users. The improvements will increase visibility for drivers exiting Cross Coates Road, making it easier to see approaching traffic on Yarborough Road and helping to reduce the potential for vehicle collisions.

The project has been carefully planned to bring together a number of essential highway improvements within one programme of works. Delivering these elements at the same time will reduce the need for additional roadworks in the future, helping to minimise longer-term disruption for residents, businesses and road users. The main closures have been planned for overnight or weekends.

The scheme includes:

  • Reconstruction of sections of road and footpath
  • Changes to the road layout
  • Replacement of damaged kerbs
  • Drainage improvements
  • New road markings

As part of the project, the junction of Norman Road and Yarborough Road will be closed to traffic throughout the duration of the works, from Monday 13 July to Saturday 7 December.

The work to be completed in phases

Phase 1 – Civil engineering works and footpath reconstruction

Phase 1 will run from Monday13 July to Friday 20 November and will include junction realignment works, replacement of damaged kerbs and drainage features, and footpath reconstruction.

Phase 1A – Grange Walk to Tesco car park entrance

Works will be completed in sections and may require:

  • Temporary footpath closures
  • Bus stop suspensions
  • Side road closures
  • Temporary suspension of on-street parking

These measures will allow two-way traffic to remain in place on Yarborough Road wherever possible.

Phase 2 – Road reconstruction and road markings

Phase 2A – Deep road reconstruction

Taking place between Tuesday 10 November and Sunday 29 November, these works will be carried out overnight under full road closures from 7pm to 4am, including weekends to accelerate the programme completion date. The works will be carried out in sections, starting from the Market Hotel Roundabout, working towards Grange Walk junction.

Some Phase 1 works will continue alongside these activities.

Phase 2B – Final surfacing and road markings

The final stage of the project will take place from Monday 30 November to Monday 7 December under overnight road closures between Grange Walk and the Market Hotel Roundabout from 7pm to 4am.

Parking and access

During the works, on-street parking will be suspended within and around active work areas. Residents and visitors are asked not to park on the road or path within the works zone to help maintain safety and avoid delays.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.

Bus service changes

During overnight road closures, the Stagecoach Service 4 will divert via Littlefield Lane, Chelmsford Avenue and Cambridge Road.

Outside of the closures, services will operate as normal.
