A 19-year-old from Grimsby has secured a two-year Horticultural Apprenticeship with North East Lincolnshire Council after completing a supported internship that transformed his confidence, communication skills and independence.

When Hayden began his supported internship with North East Lincolnshire Council, he was a polite and hardworking young man who often lacked the confidence to express his own views.

Over the course of the year-long programme, Hayden developed into a confident, resilient and assertive young adult, impressing every team he worked with along the way.

During his first placement with North East Lincolnshire Council’s Parks and Environment Team, Hayden adapted quickly to the physical and practical demands of the role.

As his skills and experience grew, so did his confidence.

He became more willing to share ideas, contribute to discussions and advocate for himself in the workplace.

Hayden carried this newfound confidence into his second placement at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, where he demonstrated excellent communication skills and a natural ability to engage with others.

The placement helped Hayden broaden his horizons and consider new career opportunities, including customer service roles, alongside his long-standing passion for outdoor work.

For his final placement, Hayden returned to the Parks and Environment Team, where he continued to thrive.

Like many young people entering the world of work, Hayden faced challenges along the way.

However, he consistently demonstrated determination and resilience, overcoming setbacks and growing stronger with each new experience.

His remarkable progress throughout the programme ultimately led to him securing a two-year Horticultural Apprenticeship with North East Lincolnshire Council’s Parks and Environment Team, where he continues developing the skills and confidence he has worked so hard to build.

Hayden said, “I really enjoyed the first few days of my apprenticeship because they have taught me already how physical work and inspections are done effectively.

I’ve met some brilliant and kind mannered employees who I work with in my team so if I ever have any worries or concerns, I’m not afraid to talk to them about it.

“I definitely feel a sense of pride to work for the council, and I feel now that it’s a part of a new chapter of my life which will involve valuable experience helping me to gain more confidence with communication and help me develop my knowledge for my personal and professional growth.”

Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:

“Supported Internships aren’t just about opening doors to employment for young people with additional needs.

“They are also about giving young people opportunities to grow in confidence, develop independence and discover what they are capable of achieving.

“Hayden’s journey is a fantastic example of how life-changing these programmes can be.

“We are delighted that Hayden has secured an apprenticeship with the Parks and Environment Team and look forward to seeing him continue to succeed.”

Supported Internships are designed to help young people with additional needs gain valuable workplace experience, develop employability skills and build confidence for future careers.
