A local organisation last week celebrated becoming an Armed Forces Covenant signatory, after making a pledge to support veterans and serving personnel in North East Lincolnshire.

Grimsby In Bloom, based at The Pavilion, on Freshney Drive in Grimsby, work on projects around the area that enhance the community and leave a lasting impact.

Working closely with North East Lincolnshire Council’s Armed Forces Officer, the group have become the latest organisation to add their signatures to the Armed Forces Covenant – a commitment to supporting members of the armed forces community in the area.

Grimsby In Bloom have pledged to offer veterans, serving personnel, and their families a space in their gardens to reflect, and to tend to plants and flowers. They can also use their café space to meet with others and share stories.

Attending the celebration last week were professionals from the Council, Navigo, NEL4 Heroes, Op Courage, the Hull4 Heroes Valour Recognised Centre, the North East Lincolnshire Health & Care Partnership, and members of the Armed Forces community.

Grimsby In Bloom hosted the event as an opportunity to engage with members of the Armed Forces community to find out how they can support them and their families with a safe, social space.

Councillor John Mills, the Council’s recently-appointed Armed Forces Champion, explained:

“This is an important step in signifying to those who have served, or are perhaps still serving in some capacity, that they don’t have to be lonely, and they don’t have to stay at home. They are welcome in their communities, and there are spaces that are not only open to them, but that will welcome them and others who have served.

“I’m really pleased to have Grimsby In Bloom on board with us as signatories.”

Grimsby In Bloom’s Elaine and Craig, said:

“We were delighted with the turnout on Monday and the positive response from attendees. We hope this will be the first of many drop-in sessions with members of the Armed Forces Community.”
