Maintenance works will take place from Monday 22 June to a number of bus stands in the Riverhead Exchange.

The works form part of the transport team’s general maintenance budget for the year and will include the removal of fire damage and repainting of bus stands C, D, E and F.

Fire damage was uncovered when the bus stop seating was removed as part of plans to tackle the anti-social behaviour in the area.

North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, are continuing to look at alternatives for refurbishment of the front benches and other initiatives working with partners to further address the anti-social behaviour issues identified.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: “The area has been subject to anti-social behaviour which has included groups of street drinkers gathering and causing intimidation towards members of the public waiting for a bus, glass getting stuck in the wooden bench slats and rubbish accumulating at the back of the benches.

“Council workers have continued to engage with groups that congregate, clean the benches and remove any potential hazards, but it has become a recurring issue which is deemed unreasonable for the public.

“This is why we decided to remove some of the benches, with the public’s safety and comfort being of paramount importance. By doing this, staff have uncovered the fire damage which will be resolved during these works.”

To allow the works to be completed at each stand and ensure the safety of passengers and those completing the works, each stand will be temporarily unavailable while works are carried out. People will still be able to catch the bus, but will temporarily not be able to use the shelter or sit down.

All stands will be completed and fully reopened from Thursday 25 June.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s regeneration partner, ENGIE, are overseeing the works with organisation, Empower, carrying out the works.
