NORTH East Lincolnshire Council has been asked to present Central Government with a detailed list of schemes, which will unlock £25m of public money to transform Grimsby Town Centre over the next five years.

The cash has been ring-fenced for the town and will be released as part of Grimsby’s inclusion into the Government’s Town Deal programme, to be spent on projects that have received public support.

To meet the requirements for the money’s release, the authority is creating a ‘Great Grimsby Masterplan and Investment Plan’, which will outline the regeneration projects in detail. Peoples’ views on these, and suggestions that they give, are needed to help shape the plan before it is submitted to Government.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions on social gatherings, views are being sought online. The consultation has now been extended until Sunday 26 July. Visit https://virtualengage.arup.com/grimsby-town-centre/  for full details.

“There is now a real momentum around peoples’ desire for change and a determination to see the successful completion of our on-going projects whilst we seek to win new money for the transformation of our town centre areas,”  said North East Lincolnshire Council leader Cllr Philip Jackson.

“What we now need is the people of this town to unite with us – get involved, tell us what they think and share their ideas with us,” he added.

The Masterplan will focus on the town centre, from Alexandra Dock in the north, to Wellowgate in the south, and from Cartergate in the west to King Edward Street in the east. The three key areas identified for attention are the Riverhead including Garth Lane, St James’ and Alexandra dockside. Ideas put forward so far include more cafes, leisure and business space, new homes and a better use of the waterfront.

The recent separate bid for £25m of funding from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund will be included in the Masterplan.
