A project to ensure care home residents in our patch did not feel lonely or isolated during the height of the COVID pandemic has won an award and recognition from the Young Advisors.

The project saw a group of young people in North East Lincolnshire write postcards to a number of care home residents.

From there, the project took off, with more and more young people and residents joining in. At it’s height over the summer, over 50 local youngsters got involved.

As the project developed and the pandemic continued, postcards turned into cakes, pressed flowers and reading poetry to residents over a live link.

Now the young people have received recognition from their peers, winning the best community project award.

The Young Advisors are a national network of trained social entrepreneurs, aged 13-24, from diverse and representative backgrounds, skilled at gathering the opinions of their peers.

Each year the group hold an awards ceremony to recognise projects being run by young people across the UK that are doing something new, different or innovative.

Councillor Ian Lindley, portfolio holder for children, education and young people, said: “I’m really proud of the work that these young people have been doing through the pandemic.

“At a time when the pandemic was starting out and everything was so uncertain, these young people were volunteering to do something small but effective, just to brighten somebody’s day.

“They thoroughly deserve this award and I’d like to take this opportunity to pass on my congratulations to all those involved.”
