Structural works for Corporation Road Bridge to be considered by planning

Refurbishing works to the iconic Corporation Road Bridge in Grimsby have moved a step closer after a submission was made to the Council’s Planning Portal.

An Environmental Screening Assessment has been submitted to consider the impact of the structural works on the local environment.

The key structural works taking place will include:

• Deep cleaning of all steel parts of the bridge, both above and below the bridge deck, including the structure supporting the control room.
• Repairs to corroded steel parts and replacement of defective rivets and connections.
• Removal and replacement of bridge deck plates and resurfacing.
• Repair works to the substructure at each end of the bridge and the piers, supporting the main structure.
• Replacement of all bridge bearings.
• Installation of a permanent jacking platform on the riverbed to enable bridge bearing replacement in the future. 

A further planning application will be submitted in the coming weeks seeking approval for a number of aesthetic changes to the bridge as part of the refurbishment, including re-painting, control room works and lighting.

Residents and businesses will have an opportunity to comment on the design as part of the detailed engagement process taking place later this year. Bridge Engineers are being supported by Historic England and key local heritage experts to ensure the refurbishment will be a tribute to the Grade 2 Listed Structure first opened in 1925.
