Fantastic new digital technology will be switched on from tonight at Grimsby Minster.
Funded through the Cultural Development Fund, and delivered by Grimsby Creates, a GOBO lighting projector has been mounted on a lighting column in St James Square as part of the refurbishment and regeneration of the area.
A GOBO projector is one which can have a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of a lighting source so that it can project patterns, and derives from “Go Between Optics” or “Goes Before Optics”.
The projector can show different lights, patterns and custom images, both static and animated, throughout the year. It has been angled to take in the contours and different sides of Grimsby Minster utilising the tower and either side.
The list for 2021-22 has been programmed in to include awareness days, or to have beautiful patterns to coincide with events or seasons as well as celebrating our heritage and culture.
Cllr Callum Procter, Cabinet member for culture, said: “This will be fantastic to see throughout the year, and I’m looking forward to the feedback. We have been working with representatives from the Minster to make sure that the projections are both sensitive and suitable, as well as complementing the existing floodlights in the area.”
The first of the projections will be on 1 October, with colours chosen to represent the Lincolnshire flag for Lincolnshire Day. Other special projections to watch out for in the first few months will be around Bonfire night, Remembrance Day and Christmas.
The work in St James Square is part of the Heritage Action Zone work, which aims to unleash the power in England’s historic environment to create economic growth and improve quality of life in villages, towns and cities. Working with local people and partners, Historic England is breathing new life into old places that are rich in heritage and full of promise – unlocking their potential and making them more attractive to residents, businesses, tourists and investors.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport funds the Cultural Development Fund which is administered by Arts Council England.
